Backyard Adventuring During Winter Storm Gianna by Nikki Malatin

Cross Country Curious
January of 2026 brought some unusual weather to North Carolina. The second winter storm in as many weeks brought heavy snow. During major snow storms, I am unable to get out of my rural neighborhood. In anticipation being homebound, I bought an used set of cross country touring skis for $30. I will admit that I can be a gear snob, but I am open to new adventures using whatever gear is on hand.

Setting Out
I ventured out from my garage, made my way to the street. and set out towards the nearby woods and tree nurseries. I avoided steep hills and managed to make my way to an unpaved road that wandered down to the river without falling.

Lost in the Beauty of Nature
As I skied along the river, I couldn't help but marvel at the winter beauty surrounding me. Instead of turning back towards home, I decided to keep going, leading me to a new unpaved road that ran parallel to my neighborhood.

Exploring the Unknown
Slightly daunted by the unfamiliar terrain and the snow covering all familiar landmarks, I continued on until I met a creek going across the road. I verified with Google Maps that the creek led to a pond near my house. I pushed forward and was relieved to hear some of my neighborhood kids playing in the snow in the distance. Finally, I caught a glimpse of a friendly neighbor's house through the trees. Pushing my way through the underbrush, I emerged in her neighbor's backyard and promptly fell!

Unexpected Encounters
My neighbor waved to me through the kitchen window. I hope that she didn't see the fall. After that, it was a pleasant ski back to the house. It was time return to normal life and start shoveling the driveway.
According to my fitness tracker, I only skied 3 miles. The adventure felt much bigger than that. I saw snow-filled landscapes, wildlife, river scenes, and navigated through some unfamiliar territory. I am looking forward to venturing out again tomorrow. I think that I will wax the skis this time for a better glide and see much further I can go. I can't think of a better way to have spent $30.
